Ash’s First Pokémon and the Bond with Pikachu
Ash Ketchum, a 10-year-old boy from Pallet Town, dreams of becoming a Pokémon Master. On the day he becomes eligible to receive his first Pokémon, Ash oversleeps and rushes to Professor Oak’s lab. Unfortunately, all three starter Pokémon—Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle—have already been claimed. The only Pokémon left is Pikachu, a disobedient and wild Electric-type. Pikachu refuses to enter its Poké Ball or obey Ash’s commands.
While traveling, they are attacked by a flock of Spearow after Ash accidentally hits one with a rock. Trying to escape, Ash takes Misty’s bike without permission and rushes Pikachu to safety. The Spearow continue their attack, and Ash puts himself in harm’s way to protect Pikachu. Seeing Ash’s courage, Pikachu steps in and releases a powerful Thunder Shock, defeating the Spearow. This act forms a deep bond between them.
Misty Joins the Journey
After the incident with the Spearow, Misty finds her bike completely destroyed and confronts Ash. Demanding repayment, she decides to follow him on his journey. While Ash sees her as annoying at first, Misty proves to be a skilled Water-type trainer and a strong companion. Their chemistry often includes comic arguments, but their friendship deepens with time.
Pewter City Gym – The Battle with Brock
Ash’s first Gym challenge is in Pewter City, where he faces the Rock-type Gym Leader, Brock. In their first match, Ash loses because Pikachu’s Electric attacks are ineffective against Rock-types. However, a chance encounter with a man (who turns out to be Brock’s father) gives Ash a way to boost Pikachu’s power using electricity from a watermill.
In the rematch, Pikachu accidentally triggers the Gym’s sprinkler system, weakening Onix and allowing Pikachu’s electricity to work. Brock forfeits the match, impressed with Ash’s determination. Inspired by Ash and encouraged by his father to follow his own dreams, Brock leaves his family behind and joins Ash on his journey to become a Pokémon Breeder.
Introduction of Team Rocket
Soon after, Ash and his friends encounter the notorious trio: Jessie, James, and Meowth, members of Team Rocket, an evil organization that steals rare Pokémon. They target Ash’s Pikachu, believing it possesses exceptional power. Their first major attack involves breaking into a Pokémon Center and stealing all the Pokémon, but Pikachu, with help from other Electric-types, defeats them.
From then on, Team Rocket becomes a recurring comic threat. They come up with wild and often ridiculous schemes to capture Pikachu, only to be foiled and sent “blasting off” each time.
Catching Pokémon – Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle
During their travels, Ash captures many Pokémon. He earns Bulbasaur’s trust in a hidden village where the Pokémon protects abandoned ones. After helping Bulbasaur save the village, Ash catches him. Later, they find a Charmander abandoned by its trainer, Damian. Ash and his friends save it from a rainstorm. Touched by their kindness, Charmander chooses to join Ash.
Ash also encounters a mischievous Squirtle who leads a gang of Squirtles called the “Squirtle Squad.” After helping stop a wildfire and saving Pikachu, the Squirtle is inspired by Ash’s courage and joins his team.
Cerulean Gym – Misty’s Secret Identity
When Ash reaches Cerulean City to win his next badge, he is surprised to discover that Misty is actually one of the Gym Leaders, along with her sisters. Initially, Misty’s sisters offer Ash the badge without a battle, but Misty insists he earn it. In the battle, Pikachu refuses to attack Misty’s Water-type Pokémon out of loyalty. However, Team Rocket interferes, and Ash defeats them with Misty’s help. Grateful, her sisters award Ash the Cascade Badge.
More Adventures and Evolving Pokémon
As Ash journeys across Kanto, he catches and trains more Pokémon and helps others in need. He helps a Hitmonchan’s daughter reconnect with her father, rescues a Charmander again when it’s injured in battle, and faces trainers with powerful Pokémon.
Charmander eventually evolves into Charmeleon after defeating a powerful opponent. However, Charmeleon becomes disobedient, ignoring Ash’s commands. This becomes a recurring issue as it later evolves into Charizard and listens only to strong trainers, not Ash.
Other Gym Battles – Earning Badges
In Vermilion City, Ash faces Lt. Surge, who uses a powerful Raichu. Pikachu is badly injured in their first match. Ash is offered a Thunder Stone to evolve Pikachu but refuses, respecting Pikachu’s choice to stay the same. In the rematch, Pikachu uses its speed and agility to defeat Raichu, earning the Thunder Badge.
In Celadon City, Ash battles Erika, who runs a perfume shop and Gym. After initially being kicked out for mocking perfume, Ash disguises himself to enter the Gym. During the battle, Team Rocket causes a fire, and Ash helps rescue Erika’s Gloom. Touched by his bravery, Erika gives him the Rainbow Badge.
In Fuchsia City, Ash competes in a Ninja-style Gym against Koga. The battle is chaotic, involving Venomoth and Golbat, but Ash ultimately wins and earns the Soul Badge.
In Saffron City, Ash’s team faces Sabrina, a powerful Psychic-type trainer who uses telekinesis and turns people into dolls. After being defeated, Ash returns with a ghost-type Haunter from Lavender Town. Haunter’s silly antics make Sabrina laugh, breaking her psychic control and earning Ash the Marsh Badge.
Ash also earns the Marsh Badge, Volcano Badge, and finally the Earth Badge after a long and tough battle against Team Rocket at the Viridian Gym, which they temporarily take over after Giovanni, Team Rocket's boss, leaves.
The Pokémon League at Indigo Plateau
With eight badges in hand, Ash qualifies to enter the Indigo Plateau Conference, the ultimate test for trainers. He faces many skilled opponents and passes the early rounds. However, during a crucial battle, his Charizard refuses to fight, lying down and sleeping in the middle of the match. As a result, Ash loses and is eliminated from the tournament.
Though disappointed, Ash realizes how far he has come as a trainer. He accepts his defeat and promises to grow stronger, continue training, and one day become a Pokémon Master.
Season Finale – Saying Goodbye
As the season ends, Ash, Misty, and Brock part ways briefly. Brock returns to help Professor Ivy, and Misty heads back home to Cerulean City. Ash returns to Pallet Town, where Professor Oak praises him but also challenges him to grow further. Ash promises to travel to new lands, meet more Pokémon, and continue his journey to become the very best.
